Is a month always thirty days?
And when, exactly,
do the thoughts inside the brain
become appropriate?
How many hours must gather
before they can call themselves a day—
a day with neither light
nor darkness?
I think I will go and ask
the one who has no rice,
no lentils,
or perhaps the one
who has a flat,
a bottle of whisky,
a car.
What a strange thing—
how quickly everything happens.
Twenty-four hours make a day,
and yet no two days
are ever the same.
There are tides in the rice,
ebb and flow in the mud—
to him,
it is all a blur.
But whisky and cars
count twenty-four differently.
They say twenty-four hours
are hardly a pinch
in the palm of a day.
They say night and day
have no ending within twenty-four,
while beside the sky of money
the universe itself
seems to orbit.
Ram Whisky can lift you
from a little slum
and carry you straight to the stars.
With a bulldozer,
he can turn a city
into a winter ski resort.
And then, all at once—
within those same twenty-four hours—
an accident happens.
The radio announces:
There will be no night tonight.
For the entire twenty-four hours,
there will be only day.
Because today,
the bulldozer itself
is whisky.
Let us leave it at that.
Why is every October
like this?
Because even now,
October does nothing
but make me think.
