Let a New Hell Begin

I must go to the garden, to Mother.

There, quicksand lies hidden
in an ocean of people.
And yet, amid a multitude of dots,
each one is a human being.

Amid the screams and the clamour,
even a mother loses her bearings.

In a drone shot,
her life is cut into jump cuts
for social media.

Like ants, the balloons of human existence
burst one after another.

Air cannot be held in one's hands.
The mirror of human welfare
stands before us.

The goddess's evening aarti
arrives and falls silent.
Fear rises from the sweat
of the human body.

Like some fascist parade,
they march forward.
How much farther
will they go?

People move forward;
the drone captures the shot.

The crowd reaches the United Nations.
Twenty people lie on the road,
spreading the blood-red alta of roses.

In a newly dead city,
children begin their dialogue.

The child who crawls
towards its mother
lies bleeding on the road,
crushed beneath the feet of humanity.

This is the ornament
of the new world—
where, even amid a fascist parade,
the metallic clangour of drone shots
continues to ring.

In so many different ways,
human beings perform
the last rites of human beings.

Jihad, bombs, war—
and then, once again,
the roar of Durga Puja.

The child who learns to walk
holding its mother's hand
reaches its mother
only to encounter death.

The child watches.
Society watches through its screens.

Let a new hell begin—

where nothing remains
but flashes of light
and a thousand colours.

I learn the language
of those flashes.

I have nothing to offer.
I can only write down
the faint whispers
of a melody.
