A Letter to the Self: The Music of Modernity

From the very moment I began writing this letter, one question has been troubling me: What does “modernity” mean, and what does it mean to be “modern”? What place does the coherence of the mind have in the life of an ordinary modern urban human being?

The strings of the urban mind today seem largely disconnected. The individual keeps searching for the melodies that are tied to those lost and fragmented strings, each vibrating across different dimensions. And those melodies, too, are bound to different octaves. As an urban human being, one is constantly trying to bring all these melodies together on a single string, to transform them into one harmonious composition. One longs to create a sense of coherence within the mind.

And yet, within the modern urban mind, new and increasingly unruly melodies are born every day. At the same time, that very modern individual tries to bring all these wild, almost mad melodies together and create a harmony out of them.

But can such music really be created in a social world where new forms of discord are being produced every moment in the world outside our minds?

To create a coherent melody, there must be a “music conductor” within the mind itself. And perhaps, standing amidst social media and technology, the first thing we have lost is precisely that conductor.

Modernity seems to have made the melodies of the mind even more turbulent, unruly and unrestrained.

The question, therefore, is: Who will give us this “music conductor”? Or how will this conductor emerge within us?

If I speak only of my own mind, it has always wanted to play across different octaves and on different strings. It does not seem to want any kind of coherence within itself. It almost seems to dislike the music of the modern urban mind altogether.

At times, it longs for the spirit of a Baul; at times, for the poverty and surrender of a Kangal; at times, for sheer abandon and restlessness; and sometimes, for stillness.

There is no single horse pulling the chariot of my mind.

It is as though horses, elephants, cows and calves are all running together at the same time.

Is there a music conductor capable of understanding the music created by all of them?

Is this what it means to become hyper-modern?

Does becoming hyper-modern require a certain spiritual equilibrium within us? Perhaps only then can these horses, elephants and calves run together—and still create music.

Does that mean that, alongside becoming modern, spirituality becomes indispensable for the coherence of the mind?

Perhaps the next generation will have to find the answer—not merely as a philosophical question, but as a condition of their own survival.
