The Meaning of Greatness
There is a definition of being great.
Like knowing how to swim,
And simply becoming one with the water.
Thrashing your arms and legs,
Making a great splash in the water,
Is not quite what greatness means.
To soak yourself in water,
To stretch out upon the dew-kissed grass,
And lie there in quiet surrender—
That comes close to being great,
But is not quite greatness.
When horses, without the lash of a whip,
Move together in a single direction,
Perhaps they become great.
To devote an entire lifetime
To the practice of a single raga—
Perhaps that is the profound weight
Of contemplative greatness,
A weight the Earth itself carries.
When one stands upright,
In harmony with gravity,
The currents have already flowed away.
And those who write
The history of those currents
Are the ones who become
The great and luminous minds
That send lanterns soaring
Into the sky
For a newborn child.
